MATTHEW 23:29-31
YOU ARE SONS OF THOSE WHO MURDERED THE PROPHETS
In the past few lessons, we have been studying Matthew 23. We spent quite some time on the seven ‘woes,’ seven accusations against the scribes and the Pharisees for their failure to live up to their position as guardians and teachers of God’s law. Today I would like to return to the last woe and explore the concept of sonship from a biblical perspective. What does the Bible teach about sonship? Let’s read Matthew 23:29-31.
Matthew 23:29. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,
30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
31 Thus you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.
